What Is Bone Broth?
Bone broth is literally broth that’s made out of bones.. duh!
It’s actually pretty simple, the broth is made by simmering animal bones and is highly nutritious. There are so many benefits of bone broth: promote gut & digestive health, support joint mobility, stronger skin, hair & nails.
Bone broth is great for ALL ages ( fun fact: bone broth is considered a first food for babies to ease/prepare their gut & digestive system for actual food!) & there’s literally not a single con to consuming it, unless you are plant based and do not consume animal products.
Why am I drinking it?
I started making bone broth because Rick wanted to incorporate more collagen into his life, so I wanted to introduce him to the wonderful world of bone broth. Of course, there are collagen pills and gummies out there, but none of it has even half of the health benefits as bone broth & it doesn’t get more natural than this.
I have recently been back on my workout routine, throughout the week I do a mixture of Kickboxing, Unconventional Training & Animal Flow , so I’m asking a lot from my body, especially my joints. Consuming bone broth helps with lubricating & strengthening my joints, it also helps with the recovery from the workout, plus the gut health benefits from the broth can really help me out with my hormonal acne.
Bone Broth VS. Stock
In essence, they’re both the same & the same technique is used. The main difference is how long it’s cooked for and what type of bones go into it.
Stocks are made from meatier bones & it takes less time to cook (1-2 hours). The purpose is to use as a base in soups and stews. (literally just like chicken soup)
Bone Broth is made with bones that has more cartilage & joints like feet, neck, bone marrow & back because that is where most of the collagen will come from. The longer the broth cooks the more collagen it will extract out of the bones, 10-12 hours is the sweet spot for me.
How Do I Make it? (Chicken Bone Broth)
Ingredients
Chicken Feet (1 pound)
Chicken Neck (1 pound)
Chicken Carcass (1)
Carrots (2 medium sized)
Celery (5-6 stems)
Yellow Onion (1 medium sized)
Apple Cider Vinegar
Rosemary (2 sprigs- this is optional)
Thyme (3-4 sprigs- this is also optional)
Directions
Pre-Heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 celsius) & spread the chicken bones on a baking tray. You might need two trays because you want all the bones to be roasted evenly.
Place the trays of bones into the oven for 30 minutes to roast it. The reason for roasting the bones is to create a deeper and richer flavor for the broth.
While the bones are in the oven, give the carrots, celery & onions a rough chop and if you have decided to add the herbs, tie them together with butcher’s twine.
Set up a large pot with a lid (it’s really important that the pot that you are using has a lid).
After 30 minutes of roasting, let the bones rest for about 10 minutes because it’s going to be hot and you don’t want to burn yourself. Place the bones in the pot & drizzle about 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar on the bones. The acidity helps with breaking down the collagen in the bones, you can also sub this with a lemon but I prefer the vinegar.
Add all the veggies, herbs & add enough water to cover the bones and veggies.
Turn the heat on high and bring it to a simmer then bring the heat to the lowest temperature and leave it covered for 10-12 hours.
When it’s done strain the broth and place it in containers. You’ll probably need multiple, I used up three 32 oz deli containers.
If you plan on drinking it within a few days, store it in the fridge and to enjoy it, just scoop out the broth into a cup, it will look like jello because of the collagen then heat it up in the microwave for about a minute. I like to add a pinch of salt to taste but if you don’t mind plain broth, just skip the salt.
You don’t have to drink it right away, you can also freeze the bone broth for up to 2 weeks!
